High hopes for Track

A few weeks in and the track team is looking quite promising. Both the boys and the girls are putting out results that head coach Rick Rogers says reminds him of the 2011 team. For those of you who aren’t familiar with SMW track history, the 2011 team was absolutely stacked across the board and qualifying athletes for state in almost every event. Having a team that talented twice is not a common occurrence. Although the distance team of 2013 was highly talented the rest of the squad was not quite there. That’s not the case for 2014 however. The vikings are strong in every area from throwers and jumpers to sprinters and distance.

The boys team came away with 1st place at both the East Quad and South Relays, coming away with 2nd place out of 12 teams at Topeka Relays. The girls came away with 2nd, 4th and 5th to add to West’s overall dominance. The next meet was KU Relays, the 2nd biggest high school track meet in the nation. This year, 30 of the team’s best athletes were sent to Lawrence to compete. This speaks volumes for the program. West is on the rise and looking at a powerful season.
