Advice on Getting Involved
As I get further into my first year as an upperclassmen, I just recently realized this is also the first year I have actually been involved in any type of extracurricular activities. I know I still have a little over a year left before graduation, but I feel like I need to be involved in as much as I possibly can to make up for two years of lost time.
After getting involved in the beginning of my junior year, I saw there isn’t as much underclassmen involvement in clubs and groups than is desired. Even though many clubs are run by upperclassmen, the underclassmen still play a huge role in them.
In my first two years of high school, getting involved seemed very intimidating. I was scared of the idea of being around a group of people I had never met before, not to mention I didn’t know what a club did. I also could never find out about all the clubs that were available to me and when they met. I just really didn’t want to move that far out of my comfort zone alone.
Another aspect of my underclassmen under involvement was that I used to be very unsure of my interests, so I didn’t know what club would best suit me. That’s what clubs are for though, right?!
So here is my advice underclassmen… GET INVOLVED! We have such a diverse range of groups and clubs here at West that you can find one that caters to any of your interests! If you are curious about what clubs our school has to offer and when they meet, you can see them on the announcements, ask your counselor about them, or check on smwest.smsd.org.
