Boys Soccer Celebrates Senior Night

The Vikings defeated Leavenworth Tuesday night, 1-0 as it marked the last regular season game for many in the program.

Seniors Juan Arambula, Alex Gomez, Brian Hernandez, Mason Jones, Julio Lopez, Diego Loya, Andres Pena, Alex Sedlacek and Antonio Valdenegro took the field one final time before their first regional match next week.

Although there was one more person to say goodbye to that was not a player, but the head coach, Gordon Wetmore, who has had the job for 31 years now.

The night started with alumni members of past soccer teams, ranging from last season all the way to the beginning of Wetmore’s career in 1986.

Wetmore won a 6A state title and was awarded Sunflower League Coach of the Year in 1991, after finishing as the runner-up in 1990.

Although it was his and nine other seniors last home game, Wetmore seemed more focused on the game, as he grabbed the mic to say something to the crowd before the game started, “It’s a great day to be a Viking, let’s go guys let’s get it tonight.”

The Vikings did just that as Ben Wilhoit scored in the first half, which is all the Vikings needed offensively thanks to a clean sheet from the defense and goalies Randy Ochoa and Zach Wilhoit.

Although Tuesday was Senior night, the Vikings season is not over, as they will try to pull off one more run for the seniors and Coach Wetmore.
