School is Killing Us?

Emma Stamm

Theres a research study that is saying “sitting is the new smoking”. Joseph McClendon III and Tony Robbins started this new investigation on why sitting is killing us. Our bodies are not meant to be sitting all day. They are mean’t to be running, walking and hiking; Not sitting at desks all day typing and writing. I can bet as you are reading this you are sitting. We sit a total of 7 or 8 hours a day! The researchers say enzymes that help break down fat drop 90% and good cholesterol drops 20%, while sitting! Along with the risk of diabetes rising. “People with “sitting jobs” have TWICE the rate of cardiovascular disease as people with standing jobs” Huffington post says. We need to get up and get active. Even if its just for a 20 minute walk, every little thing counts towards living a long life. I asked some students how long they think they sit for a day. On average all the students, grades 9th to 12th said 7 to a total of 10 hours a day they spend sitting. The Active Times gives 5 reasons on what sitting for long periods of time do to you.

1.Greater risk of developing cancer

2.Greater risk of developing heart disease

3.Increased risk in developing Type 2 diabetes

4.More susceptible to muscular issues

5.Higher risk of developing depression

Now seeing that list makes me want to go on daily walks. What about you?
