The Shawnee Mission West’s Girls Basketball team starts their season on Friday, December 6th. Varsity tips-off at 5:30 at Shawnee Mission Northwest. With three weeks of long practices under their belts, they are ready for the season to finally start!

“I’m really excited about this year’s team. We have a lot of returning talent, along with some new talent coming in and we all have really high expectations for the season. The girls are all really close and we love playing together which makes it a lot of fun!” Senior Marleah Campbell said.

This season, there are 7 new members to the JV/Varsity level, 12 returners, including 4 seniors. The girls were also very excited to find out that they would be getting a new coach to help with the program. Coach Beerends will be an Assistant Varsity coach. He has taught PE classes in the Shawnee Mission School District for 6 years and this will be his 4th season as the Jumps coach for the SM West Track and Field Team. He also was a member of his basketball team that finished 3rd at state his junior season and won the state championship his senior season.

“He’s a fun, but serious coach who has a lot of experience playing basketball. It will be  nice to learn new things and get some different input on how to improve.” Junior Paige Henderson said.

With at least 20 games to play, the girls can’t wait to have their first game.
