A New Beginning for XC
September 24, 2013
The Cross Country team lost 8 of last year’s top 10 boys to graduation. This season, the team is essentially starting fresh. In an interview with head coach Jeff Onnen, he discusses his thoughts on the loss of so many runners and how this young team can follow in their footsteps.
“It’s hard to see them go. They were a huge part of the team’s ability to make it to the state meet for all 4 years they were here. On the other hand I’m excited to start something new with this young group of guys.”
This year’s team is considerably not as deep as it has been. With the loss of so many seniors, a lot of younger guys will have to step up. But this is not a new responsibility for this year’s juniors and seniors.
“I think we planted a seed last spring. We knew we were going to lose them [’13 seniors] so this year’s leaders knew they were going to have to work hard…Yes I feel the team has stepped up. I’m happy with what I’ve seen so far. Our older guys are getting better and the younger ones are very promising”
As the season gets under way, anticipation is high for this young team to show what they can do.
