Boys and girls basketball are in the process of competing for substate titles and have started their journey to claim the state championship.

Both varsity teams were victorious in the first round of substate and will advance to compete for substate titles. The boys team ended their game with a score of 72-65 against the Wyandotte Bulldogs. They will face the Shawnee Mission North Indians, who they had previously lost to earlier this season, in the substate championship game.

“We feel good about it,” senior Tyriq Gunnels said when asked about the rematch versus the Indians. “If we do our job, we have a great chance of winning. We are ready.”

The Lady Vikings defeated the SMN Indians 71-46 and they will face the Free State Firebirds, who they previously lost to, in Lawrence, Saturday at 7 pm.

To be eligible to play in the state tournament, both teams will have to win their respective substate games. Scheduling conflicts between the state basketball tournament and spring break trips have many athletes questioning what the rest of the season will look like.

State basketball tournament games are scheduled to run Wednesday through Saturday the week before Spring break at the Wichita State University basketball arena. That Friday is the official start of spring break and many seniors are booked to leave for their senior trips that day and the following Saturday.

“It’s stressful having to deal with the conflicts, but I just want to make it there and then we’ll see what can be done,” senior Morgan Mauck said. “I just want to get there first and then deal with the problems.”

Both teams have been hard at work preparing for their remaining games. The two hope to make it to the state tournament and go as far as they can.
