Boys Soccer Defeats Rockhurst
September 9, 2014
The varsity soccer team beat Rockhurst for the first time in almost 10 years.
“It was an exhilarating feeling to beat Rockhurst,” senior Jack Arndt said. “It didn’t seem real for awhile.”
The Hawklets took the early lead, scoring 15 minutes into the first half. Not long after, junior Ricky Vargas scored to tie up the game.
“The first thing that came to my mind [after scoring] was Andre,” Vargas said. “He’s a big influence on me and I want to dedicate this season to him and make it big.”
After a halftime speech from coach Gordon Wetmore, the team started the second half determined to win. With twenty minutes left in the game, Rockhurst scored an own-goal to put the Vikings on top. The boys defended well until the final whistle was blown and came out victorious.
“The rivalry between West and Rockhurst used to be huge,” athletic director Don Perkins said. “It has died down since then, but it used to be a big deal.”
The team was proud of their win and they look forward to the rest of the season.
