Jan Berghaus, one of Shawnee Mission West’s very own math teachers, was recently chosen to receive a FOX-4 Crystal Apple Award, an annual honor that is given to only four teachers in the Kansas City metro area. On Thursday, an impromptu assembly was held during fourth block to surprise Berghaus, who was featured on the evening news, with the award.
“I feel honored. In a place [like West] where there are so many wonderful teachers, I just feel really, really humbled,” Berghaus said.
In addition to an actual crystal apple, Berghaus will receive Southwest Airline vouchers worth $1,000, an free overnight stay at the Hyatt Crown Center and other small gifts.
