Sporting Is Surging
April 17, 2012
For the first time since 1998, an MLS (Major League Soccer) team has started the season with a 6-0 record: that team would be our very own Sporting KC.
Based in Livestrong Sporting Park right by the Legends, Sporting KC has gotten off to a terrific start after losing in the semi-finals of the MLS Cup last season. On Saturday night, Sporting only needed one goal, a header scored in the 63rd minute by Frenchman Aurelien Collin, to clinch a win over Real Salt Lake.
Livestrong Sporting Park, which opened last summer, was rocking as the crowd of nearly 20,000 soccer fans cheered their team onto victory. The building of this brand-new, state-of-the-art stadium has coincided with the revival of prominence for Kansas City’s MLS team.
Formerly known as the Kansas City Wizards, the team was a bottom-feeder in the MLS until new management and an unbelievable home stretch rally returned KC to the top tier of their league. Supported by the fervent fan section known as “The Cauldron,” Sporting KC has jumped to the top spot in the league by winning six straight to begin this season.
With such an enthusiastic fanbase and a talented young cast of players, Sporting KC seems poised to establish them as the MLS’s next powerhouse. Only time will tell.
