Boys Soccer Win First Regional Game

The Vikings took the field Monday night against Shawnee Mission Northwest hoping to put an end to a streak dating all the way back to 2004.

It had  been that long since the boys soccer team had won a regional match, until Monday night.

Senior Alex Gomez had an impressive goal in the 15th minute that gave the Vikings an early 1-0 lead, which was all the team needed.

Trailing West 1-0 with 14 seconds left, Northwest took a corner kick, knowing it was their last chance to tie the game, but the Vikings were able to get the ball out of the box and secure a 1-0 win against Northwest.

Junior goalie Zach Wilhoit had a couple of nice saves as the defense once again had a solid game, posting a clean sheet.

This is the last time that nine seniors, as well as Coach Gordon Wetmore, will try to make a state championship run, and they are now closer to that feat then they have been in the last 13 seasons.

They will play on Thursday night in the regional final. Their opponent is to be decided.
