Dracula, Frankenstein, and all monsters alike come out to party in the new movie “Hotel Transylvania.”

The new animated film by Sony Pictures uses the voices and personalities of a star studded cast including actors/actresses like Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg (Saturday Night Live), Selena Gomez (Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place), and Kevin James. The cast helps to brighten a complicated plot line.

Brought together to celebrate the 118th birthday of Mavis (Gomez), the daughter of Dracula (Sandler), the movie circles around her desire to see the world, and her father’s resistance to that desire. Chaos is brought into their home, a hotel for monsters, when a human named Jonathan (Samberg) stumbles across the estate. A tainted perception of humans derived from Dracula’s past has made all monsters scared and disgusted of them, thus making Dracula have to do everything he can to keep Jonathan unnoticed in the hotel.  This becomes a challenge as the curious guests and Mavis become interested in the newly disguised Jonathan. As he becomes torn between staying in the hotel and being forced to leave by Dracula, Jonathan and Mavis begin to have feelings for each other. The movie shows twists and turns as Dracula discovers the truth about humans, and viewers wonder if Mavis and Jonathan will ever be together.

I was decently excited to see this film, as I am with any other cartoon. I felt like the comedian-stacked cast added entertaining familiar voices to scenes with a twist. With a target audience around a younger crowd, this high schooler still found himself chuckling throughout the film. Sandler, James, David Spade and the unexpected likes of Cee-Lo Green created a lighthearted and simplisticly funny combination of comedy.

I found a slight downfall in the movie when halfway through I became irritated by the overprotecting parenting Dracula uses with Mavis. I felt like by that point I understood the fact that Dracula was scared of Mavis being with a human, but it was obvious that they would be together. Cliche? Yes, and that could be one reason to not see this movie. Though entertaining, the corny romantic storyline grows old as you go through the motions waiting for all your predictions created while watching the film come true.

“Hotel Transylvania” is nevertheless a film that is perfect for the young, and the young at heart. I give the film 3 and a 1/2 stars out of 5. If you and your friends are looking for a simple but funny movie to see, this is the one.

The monsters may not be so scary looking, but at being funny, they are surprisingly scary good.
